so like I know I havent posted in a while cuz stuff aint that interesting. But my American Gov class is starting to get me thinking again. Lately, we have been talking about random stuff in society, but something that I started thinking about is voting.
So this was essentially the basis of the conversation:
Today, there arent enough young voters. The age group of 18-25 has had the least amounts of voters for a long time. Why? People are lazy; not that they dont have the time, but that they dont want to make the time. People dont think that their vote counts. People cant relate to the issues at stake. People dont think that the issues apply to them. Politicians therefore base their whole platform on these facts. They dont talk about issues that relate to younger people. They dont try to appeal to younger people. Is this only because they know they wont vote? Some in the class said no. It's because that age group is the least informed/enlightened/smart of all the age groups. So polititians dont want some air heads decide the future of the country. This concern has been around since the founding fathers. They didnt want stupid people to vote, so they put in the constitution that only white males with land could vote. But as society grew, more and more people became educated and struggled for the right to vote(african americans and women).
So with all of these compelling issues in mind, I began to think.
Well to get younger ppl to vote, why not motivate them to vote; I was think ing along the lines of :those who register to vote get a small tax cut based on their bracket. This would apply to all registrated or registrating voters of all ages. But then the whole issue of ignorant-ppl-only-in-it-for-the-money came to mind. So what if they all had to take a standardized test? All people would still be able to vote, but they would only give out the tax cuts for those who voted AND passed the test. However, there is a pitfall I have anticipated(and there may be others I have not): What if Jim Von Dumbass walks in to take the test and ends up failing it, but says "Ah what the heck, might as well vote anyways"
The only way to combat this is to either administer the test far enough in advance and hope they forget their excitement, or place the tax cut low enough so that they wont care about going into the polls after reiving their failing score in the mail. Rely on the laziness of the ignorant I guess. Its the ambitious go-getter ignorants that I'm worried about.
If anyone wants to refute or support or critisize any of these, please do!

Summer is almost here. Im gonna be working part time at a Vet's office as a janitor. yea, mop loud, mop proud! Also takin Gov't and Macro Econ at ACC. Gonna go on a shoppin spree the first week of summer for a desperately needed new bike, watch, and otherstuff. maybe xbox 360.
But I'm really looking forward to having time to draw! Its been a month or 2 since I've drawn a new comic, or a real drawing for that matter. I have about 10 new ideas and 5 old ones. Im also looking foreward to senrior year. Im gonna have so much more free time in and out of school.
Hopes are high.
Anxiousness rising, rising, falling.....rising...
PS - if anyone has any anecdotes for a comic or wants to be in one, tell me.

| Movie Review: Mission Impossible:III(semi-spoilers) |

Well I went to see MI:III last friday night. The Mission Impossibles 1 and 2 have upheld a record for heart-stopping, teeth-clenching action, and have been major blockbusters because of it. MI:III doesnt fall short of this reputation, but in fact surpasses it. Some of my favorite highlights of the movie include: 1)the part where the dude sets up 4 remote controlled, heat-vision, gatling guns around the warehouse, then hopped in his truck and micro-ed better than Jeremy(PurePwnage), taking out almost all the ppl inside. 2) the part where Ethan's team uses an automatic baseball shooter-thing to distract the guards while Ethan swings to the top of the building.
All in all I think it was one of the better MI movies, except for the last 20 sec of the movie, where everyone is alive and happy and they run down the hall in slow motion with people cheering behind them with cheezy music playing. Like they could shake off the last 48 hours of shooting, running, and screaming in agony and pain like it was nothing.

I've been a ponderin the whole messy buisness of justice. I think the most solid definition I've come up with is as follows: Justice is 1)the action of punishing wrong-doers, 2)giving compensation to victims, and 3)exposing any truths that determine the outcome of the first two. This is derived from my observation of the IDEALS of the current legal system. Of course everyone(with moral standards) wants a murderer to go to prison/get the death penalty(whatever your preference) and of course everyone wants to see a woman recieve $500,000 for the emotional pains caused by the sudden loss of her beloved pet(true story). But as the cliche goes, justice is blind. Crimes arent always punished, people dont always win a case against their neighbor. One must empathize with the jurors, who's hard job it is to make hard moral descisions(such as under what conditions is killing a person justified as self defense).
But the first part of the definition violates the other cliche: two wrongs dont make a right. Is it right to kill someone for killing a person, or if you are against the death pentalty, is it right to take away someone's freedom for killing a person? The answer to this, I would assume, would vary depending on moral standards.
All-in-all the definition justice is derived from the moral values of "he who is appointed to decide". So is there one moral standard by which the whole country can agree? I dont think so. The only way to define justice is by your own moral standards, and since jurors of the modern judicial system are left to decide what justice is, it actually becomes a composite of randomly chosen set of morals. |
